Objective The purpose of the exercise is to get trainees to think about reality as it is known and to critically analyze it before answering the question "true or false". This exercise can be replicated in a real context, with their learners.
How to conduct it The moderator has a list of sentences related to real facts and ask trainees if that sentence is true or false. Those who are skeptical about the answer must look on the internet for it to check for additional information:
Sentences/Answers 1. The Great Wall of China is the only human made object that can be seen from space. False. Even in lower orbit, it is not easy to see.
2. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth. Depends. If you measure high above sea-level, it is the highest. However, if you measure based on its summit, Mauna Kea (Hawaii) is the highest, but most of it is under water.
3. Bats can see during daytime. True. Even though it was thought they are blind and can only navigate through echolocation, they can see.
4. Fish have a short memory span. False. They are being trained in an experiment carried out by Israel Institute of Technology, which would not be possible if they had a short memory span.
5. Coffee is made from beans. False. They are seeds.
6. Dogs can see color. True. They can see shares of blue, yellow and green.
remarks This specific exercise will allow trainees to question previously acquired beliefs related to common knowledge issues, thus realising that they must be analysed critically.
