Duration | 30 -40 minutes |
Learning outcome | Learning and using gamifying principles - Clarifying expectations on gamification |
How to conduct |
MINI LESSON:STEP 1: Connection (1-2 minutes) “In this poll exercise we formulate questions regarding gamification on a funny and quick way. Besides that, we see MDE Framework in action. We are going to interview ourselves about our expectations towards gamification" STEP 2: Teach (3-6 minutes) Gamification is when games are used in process as an element of the process. Depicted in the picture below. In the next few minutes, we will play a short game called Speedy Gonzales to interview ourselves about our expectations towards gamification in learning. For the interview we will use CLOSED QUESTIONS only. Definition of closed questions: questions we can answer “yes” or “no” or multiple choices. STEP 3: Active Engagement (6-10 minutes) run the Speedy Gonzales “Your task is as follows: 1) Form a closed question based on your personal expectations (3 minutes)” 2) Ask everyone in the room (including yourselves) 3) make a quick review on the answers (no charts because it would take longer time) Example: One of our participants is called John. John doubts that gamification will be accepted by his teachers but does not why. John has hypotheses on the reasons however So John makes a mulitple choicee poll based on his hypohteses: teachers would not accept the new approach because • they are too old to learn new things • requires too much effort • fear of loosing control in the class • fear of learners will not learn enough. So John shows his poll to the other participants meanwhile answers to others. STEP 4: Link (3-6 minutes) We went one step closer to gamification with a gamified solution. Let us see the results. ----------------------- end of mini lesson ----------- ACT PARTRun a discussion on existing experiences and expectation on Gamification Timing: 25 minutes ------------------------- End of ACT part --------------------- CLOSING PARTIn the last 5 minutes everybody lists their own key learnings on designing games. |
Remarks | Length of the workshop may vary depending on the number of learners . |
