Mini lesson 1 Making Connections • In this session we demonstrate the power of the MDE network • Teach the participants how to reframe problems as objectives • Teach how to reframe failure as „iteration” • Introduce a fast develompent cycle 2 Teaching • The trainer demonstrates a problem with a volunteer form the class. • The problem could be some difficulties in teaching. • The example was used is a motion control in welding with overhead position: The teacher did not find a good way to keep his students in the proper body and arm position to weld a seam over their head. The students hands and bodies trembled after 20 seconds. Then • We reframe a problem as an objective: „So what you want is to teach students the right positions and maintain it at least for 40 seconds, right?” 3 Engagement • We ask all the participants to form pairs • Ask the pairs to design a game within 10 minutes using simple materials they find in the room. • The game is supposed to be aimed to motivate students to improve the desired objective. 4 link to the Act part We ask them to improve their solutions in the next rounds ------------ end of mini lesson --- ACT PART • After 10 minutes the pairs show their inventions. They should not be perfect of course. Any type of solution is okay. • Then they have another 10 minutes to develop. • The pairs can steal (copy or integrate) other pairs’ results into their inventions. step 5 is a decision making: • Is any of the ideas promising? If yes go to step four. • Is any of the ideas is ready ? (fulfill the requirements of a good game and reach the objective?) If yes, then go step six. Step 6. • Finalize the project. • List the necessary materials and write the draft manual for the exercise • Prepare to other changes when you try it in real life. Timing: 30 - 45 minutes------------------------- End of ACT part --------------------- CLOSING PART In the last 5 minutes everybody lists their own key learnings on designing games. |
