Define Personal Social and Learning to learn competence

By brainstorming on what comes on mind when hearing the phrase “Personal, Social and Learning to learn Competence” the participants are asked to create their own definition.

Number of participants: Preferably more than 16 participants

Duration: approx 60 min

Objective: The aim of this activity is to make participants familiar with the concept of Personal, Social and Learning to learn Competence, to gain functual and theoritical knowledge of the three dimensions of Personal, Social and Learning Competence, as well as the main elements that are included in this specific concept. 

How to conduct

Step 1

Each participant is given a post-it and a marker and is asked to think for 10 minutes and write down one word or short phrase that comes on mind when hearing the phrase “Personal, Social and Learning to learn Competence”. After that, they are given 10 more minutes to be more specific and write down in a different post-it one skill that comes on mind when hearing about the specific competence. The procedure is repeated one more time and this time the participants have again 10 minute to write down in a different post-it in what context this competence is important to be used.

Step 2

When everyone has finished, each participant places his/her post-it on the board or flipchart or even the wall. The trainer reads aloud the answers and with the participation of the whole group he/she categorizes the similar words/ short phrases.

Step 3

A discussion follows regarding if the participants agree or disagree with the words/ short phrases and why. After that, they are asked to reflect on the words/ short phrases given, put them in order and create the definition of Personal, Social and Learning to learn Competence. In the end, the trainer presents the definition of “Personal, Social and Learning to learn Competence” given by European Commission (lifecomp 2020) and the participants compare it with their own definition.

Closing remarks

The participants will explore on their own the concept of “personal, social and learning to learn competence” and its elements. It is important for the trainer to let the participants explore themselves the knowledge provided without interfering but of course any help provided during this “exploration” is welcomed.
