Debriefing

Name of the Exercise Debriefing
Number of participants 4-8
Duration 40 minutes
Learning outcome Learn to debrief
How to conduct

Mini lesson:
STEP 1: Connection (1-2 minutes) “Since gamification focuses on emotions, after a game or a quest or a task you may face people in very different sates of mind. Some are happy, some are in full of despair. It is almost certain that they are not capable to analyse what they have done and what are the areas to be developed in their skills set. Using right questions are very important in debriefing and giving feedback instead of saying what went well and what went wrong.”STEP 2: Teach (3-6 minutes)“Using the right questions is crucial in the analysing phase. These are mostly open questions.” (The trainer asks the learners to name a few)

STEP 3. Engagement Then the trainer offers a game. Two people will sit in front of the audience. One will be an interviewer and the otherwill be the interviewed. The interviewer has a specific task: try to find as much information as she can without using CLOSED questions. The other person must be as brief as he can to make the interviewer work hard. This is a hard job. Interviewers tend to forget to ask openly because they must fight their own point of views and lose focus on their partner. Example: A: What is your hobby? (Open question) B: fishing A: Ah! Do you usually go on weekends, or do you have time on weekdays? (She already forgot to ask with open question, because she has an own picture in her inner world about fishing) Link After running a few rounds of the game above. We link to the act part: “As a teacher, when running a debriefing session in games you might consider switching your opinions off, and try to be as objective as you can. Using open questions you can lead the conversation without forming opinions.

Blind polygon may be a good exercise for the demonstration. After finishing the exercises you can use your open questions with the following order:

  1. What happened in the first (second … ) minutes?
  2. And then what happened? Who did what?
  3. Who remembered certain happenings?
  4. What was the result of these?
  5. What went well?
  6. What would you develop in your competence if you had a chance to repeat the task?
  7. How about testing your ideas with another round? After these participants will have a chance to be a trainer instead of you and practice to lead with open questions and provide feedback with questions that highlight key elements in the activity with another exercise.
